So, Arsleague is drawing to a close, and I find myself worrying that I won't get any competitive play until the next one. So, I'm taking it upon myself to start a scrimmage team. I'm not applying for a league for a number of reasons, first of which is that I'm not good enough yet. Second is that I'd like to have this team for mostly people who don't have competitive experience thus far; if you're already on a team, you're probably not going to want to listen to me calling strats, but I gotta start somewhere, and I imagine others do, too.
I'm going to get word out to the Ars people if interest from MKWEA is light (or I don't get people who can play classes that are needed or something), but I thought I'd give first crack to all y'all around here. Basically, we're going to be a team for real teams to practice against. We won't have regular matches per se (unless we decide to join a league at some point), but we'll be better for other teams to play against than a PUG (pick-up-group), and we'll get competitive experience without most of the hassle. (Also, I'll get some people interested in league play and then draft them next year if I'm a captain in Arsleague, assuming we have any cohesion and they join.)
Anyone who is interested, PM me on these here boards, and I'll be setting up a Steam Group here shortly. If you're interested, I'm thinking the team name is going to be Scrim-only Squad, and we'll use the tag [Help] or possibly [HELP!]. If you don't get why that's the tag, feel free to ask, and I'll laugh at you.

I'm not on VEV. This would be my only team after Arsleague ends. As for people not "being a good enough competitive XYZ," that's what this is for. If I were trying to get a lot of wins, I'd be joining an established team as a backup Medic (not that one would take me). I want to take people who don't have comp experience and get them that, so they CAN become good enough XYZ's.

Color me interested. I usually play solly but I've been slacking as of late. =x Otherwise, I can double as more or less anything.
Also my attendance ability is spotty.

I have a little competitive experience as medic, but not enough that I'd consider myself experienced. I'd definitely be up for this.

Big ups to Rhench for doing this, by the way. Having been there myself in UT2004, building a team and bringing them into comp from the ground floor is no small task. I should say the ladders are a year-round ordeal, so you may decide to start there if 5v5, 7v7, or even highlander appeals to any of you as a way of getting your feet wet.
Hmmm... comp highlander...
Once you have a crew together, you might hit up some of the Div 3 and Div 4 teams in the TWL league running right now for scrims, too - a good number of them are in the same boat from what I understand.

I'm considering picking up demo part-time, since other people like Medic'ing, and I need a new niche.

So I've got at least another week or two of Arsleague since TCT made the playoffs, but once that's over with, I'll start coordinating stuff around. Until then I'm going to swell our ranks, try to find a Vent host, and poke at people I know on teams that need scrubs to play against.

Feel free to invite me to any scrim you've an opening in. I do love competitive play more vs pub play. All that pub stomping gives me too much ego. =<

Chesecakenomnoms and me make a wicked critzmedic/Demo pair. Oh and I play medic too (in PUG's on the TF2 gather network). Remember that 6V6 Rhench's birthday PUG? That was fun. We need more events like that on the server.
Sidetracked post aside I'm interested (I'm an ok-ish scout/ energy drink scout and a fairly experienced/good medic). And I think Jeziah would like to play pyro on a scrim team (his personal dream is to prove pyro players can have skill too) and I’m not sure but if you could get him cheesecake is a very good demoman.

And I think Jeziah would like to play pyro on a scrim team (his personal dream is to prove pyro players can have skill too) I would indeed Proving pyro is a skill class is my secondary goal btw, my primary is popularizing the use of "spyclops" as tf2-lingo for spy-demoman. But I've pretty much given up on this because everyone I talk to about it absolutely refuses to believe I came up with it. Makes me wanna crack some skulls Incidentally, I used to be a full-time solly before I became a full-time pyro. That was over half a year and about 80 hours of playtime ago, but all it should take is a couple o' lives and I should get back in my game. I hope. I'm also an ok-ish scout and a meh sniper and a good medic (well, I'm good for my experience level of only 5 hours) and I guess I could pull off heavy or spy. But I'm a horrible everythingelse. Ok, not really a HORRIBLE everythingelse, but not exceptional or anything. I only said that because I don't play other classes much.

hey cool dudes, it's nice to see a lot of people interested in breaking into competitive so I thought I'd post some literature on the matter to help people get started. Comp play can be a bit of a shock if you aren't read up on the basics, because it works absolutely nothing like playing on a public server. I had no idea what comp play was like when I played my first match, and had no idea what was expected of me, and it very quickly became evident to me that everything I thought I knew about medic was actually just the surface of what I needed to know. As a result, I recommend to all the newer comp players I encounter to read as much as you can before jumping in, it'll make your experience much smoother and more enjoyable. this is waar's guide on competitive TF2, which is basically a required read and regarded by many as scripture : www.gotfrag.com/tf2/story/43759/ubercharged.net recently published a huge series of guides for competitive TF2, with an article for each of the bread and butter classes: basics: www.ubercharged.net/2009/08/08/competitive-tf2-part-one-basicslogistics/soldier: www.ubercharged.net/2009/08/09/competitive-tf2-part-two-the-soldier/scout: www.ubercharged.net/2009/08/09/competitive-tf2-part-three-the-scout/demo: www.ubercharged.net/2009/08/23/competitive-tf2-part-four-the-demoman/medic: www.ubercharged.net/2009/08/31/competitive-tf2-part-five-the-medic/sniper: www.ubercharged.net/2009/08/31/competitive-tf2-part-six-the-sniper/utility: www.ubercharged.net/2009/09/01/competitive-tf2-part-seven-utilities/Recently, a cool dude named jaeger (yay-grr) who plays for loaded, a super pro level team, has started posting cool tips for mid level players in his blog. The coolest bit is that he records his team's voice comms and posts them to the internets along side demo files of his team's matches, so you can watch them play while learning how to communicate with your team mates, which is everything in organized TF2. check it out here: www.mikemarcin.com/on a related note, watching demos of competitive matches is a great way to understand how matches flow, and to understand what your class's role is in your team and in different situations. be sure to watch a few, they're pretty cool. I wish all of you good fortune in your competitive experiences. Comp play can be a little discouraging at first (hopefully less so for you than for me if you read up on it before jumping into the fire ) but once you get into it it's a very deep and rewarding experience. Being able to identify with a class and being an asset to your team as that class is a really cool feeling. Just in case this post wasn't long enough, I think some community PUG's would be a good idea, esp. if we have so many people interested in playing. also: here's a lulzy inspirational video, jeziah: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndZoP4yctqAEdort to the most long winded post ever: I love hearing myself talk so I thought I'd post some stuff on competitive configuration while I'm at it. For TF2 it's really important that you maintain a consistent frame rate of AT LEAST 30, preferably 60 at all times. Also, you should consider turning mouse acceleration off if you have it on, it will improve your aim considerably and make things like twitch rocket jumps easier. If you don't know what I mean by mouse accel, it's when your cursor moves farther if you move your mouse faster, so 2 inches of mouse movement might not always equal the same amount of cursor movement. Read about all this stuff in this handy guide: www.arsclan.net/forum/showthread.php?t=29432

hmm this is a 6 person team, so I suppose there will be a lot of rotation going on if everyone is a member.
