So I know many, if not all of you use Ventrilo. I would like to start using it two... except it is not cooperating at all with me. It just sits there trying to connect to the server and never does. Things I know are not wrong 1) I have the right server info. I'm sure. 2) The firewall (windows firewall) is not blocking it (I disabled it and still, nothing.) 3) It's not a bad install, I un-installed it then re-installed it already, and still nothing. I have AVG antivirus software, but I don't think that's the problem, but It might be.. This is what it looks like forever--- I don't know what to do! Did any of you have this problem?

Step 1: Check to make sure you're trying to connect to a Ventrilo server, and not a Teamspeak or a game server. Currently, NPP does not have a Vent server. Step 2: if that isn't your problem, ask someone else. I'm of no use here.

Also make sure whatever port Vent is using is not being blocked by your router or any other firewall you might have.

how would I know if my router was blocking the port? I already opened the port in windows firewall.

Come to the darkside.....say to hell with ventrillo which looks like way too much work, and use skype, which is user friendly and reliable.

If you didn't do anything, then your router's probably blocking any weird ports that might request access. You should be able to change those settings by simply logging into it, but it does depend on your actual configuration.

Hmm, It's not the router because I took it out of the equation an plugged it into my modem directly and still no luck. and probie, I do have Skype! It rocks! But I don't think it's applicable to competitions.

Interesting development. It works on my laptop, which naturally runs through my router. Also, my desktop is vista 32bit, laptop windows 7. Something is funky with my desktop.

From the command line:
netstat -an
Try before running Vent, and during a connection attempt. Paste the results here.

Odd, not sure why you wouldn't have netstat on your machine. What you should be seeing is a list of all of the connections you have open; was hoping to use that to debug... I'll see if I can't think of something else to help you out.

I blame the gremlins.
Seriously, though, you ought to look at that error message given when you first open your console: "Specified COMMAND search directory bad". I think that means that it didn't load the PATH or whatever variables properly, and although you ought to have the netstat program, the (typically default) directory where it is located at isn't being searched for the program.
Try shutting down cmd and opening it up again, and if you get the same error code, you can either search for the program on your computer and move over there as a stopgap solution, or actually try to address your problem (as using commands in your console won't work except when executing programs from the directory you're currently looking at).

After about 20 seconds, the window closes and does not re-open. I had vent open at the time

On topic, though: Scrambles, doesn't look like data's making it past your router.. What kind of router do you have? If you'll pass that along, I can run you through it. Also, it's not AVG. I use it as well as Vent (used to, anyway) and it was fine.

I have a NetGear WNR834Bv2 RangeMax But I don't think it's my router. Hmm, It's not the router because I took it out of the equation an plugged it into my modem directly and still no luck. p.s. Is your avatar from Jin-Roh?

Try the netstat with it plugged directly into the modem, then.
What modem do you have as well, some modems double as routers, hubs, and other devices (it should also be a gateway, but I don't think that those have firewalls in them).

Is your avatar from Jin-Roh? Okay, plug your computer directly into your modem and try to connect, if that works, it's the router. In which case, follow this guide. Including the Static IP portion. If it still doesn't work, follow what pneuma said, it may be you've got a modem that doubles as a router/gateway, or another odd setting. let us know.Apparently, I can't read Also, yes it is from Jin-Roh. Edit: Ninja'd. Uh, have you tried connecting to any other servers? Maybe you entered the info wrong for that server. Still connected to only your modem, type 'ipconfig /all' into a command prompt, and tell us what is listed under 'Default Gateway' Alternatively, add me on Skype, and I can try to walk you through it as best I can. One more thing, try checking the port number is right, I just tried to connect to another server, and I had to change the port number before I could get on.
