So Valve released a beta for their new steam client. It's the first major GUI update since steam was originally released in 2003, almost 7 years ago. Those of us who are old enough remember the atrocity that was Steam in those early days. It was slow and buggy. Apparently Valve has gone back to its roots with this update. Now I realize this is a beta. But when it drops my TF2 framerate down to single digits, it's still got a lot of work left.
There's not a lot of point to this post, just ranting.

It likes to hang badly on startup. But... That's all the trouble I've had with it. Of course, I only used it once

I haven't had any problems so far. I like it a lot, actually.

I've had it crash on me a couple of times since I started. That has been annoying. Hopefully that won't continue.

Notification sound - much less jarring, i enjoy it.
shift-tab menu - very neat structure, although it irritates me that it doesn't maintain state in-game to out of game (example, I open the friends window out of tf2, then join a game. The friends window is no longer open on shift tab.)
Overall, I like the structuring of things as well as the inherent groupings of friends within games (no more inviting people who don't have the game). Some of the UI is noisy fluff, like the backgrounds on the games list (on details view), and they've thrown gradients EVERYWHERE, which is a little odd, particularly on chat windows. Also, I think the new font for chat windows and message notifications is too thin.
Performance-wise, I've noticed no real drop in framerate, but I have had the shift-tab menu stop functioning while playing tf2 dunno if I stopped getting messages during that time, since I couldn't tell if I was getting them or not.

I've had that happen, too. Thankfully I run TF2 in windowed mode and the chat windows persist outside of the game, so it wasn't such a big deal. A little annoying, though. That said, their browser seems less fidgety now, and I like the overall aesthetic. Hopefully it won't be too long before the iron out the major bugs.

I love the mocking "So Close..." part of the shift-tab acheivements block. You ALMOST made it, but you didn't.
