So, on occasion, I will depart the server saying "I'm going to go play Sins". This typically yields 2-3 people asking me what the hell am I talking about.
Start Here.

The game is an RTS based around futuristic space empires, from the people who made Galactic Civilization. All actions take place in space, around planetary/solar gravity wells. You can't go down to the planets you colonize, but you can upgrade them.
There's capital ships, which function as hero units, they gain experience by killing enemy ships / structures, and can gain additional abilities as they level up.
The different types of frigates and cruisers work well in a very close rock, paper, scissors type of way, while still having each race play differently.
There are planetary defences that can be built around planets, but prior to Entrenchment (below) they really weren't reliable as a sole means to protect your planets.
Naturally, there's research to be done, which provides the means for producing different types of ships, enhancing the ships you have, increasing your income, and allowing you to colonize different planet types.
There's been two mini-expansions since the game came out ~2 years ago, Entrenchment, and Diplomacy.
Entrenchment added starbases, which are ridiculously powerful defensive structures (which also include their own upgrades that can be purchased), as well as structure destroying units to destroy the starbases. They also added additional capabilities to the previous planetary structures, allowing hangar defenses to increase shield strength of nearby structures, for example.
Diplomacy added a new relationship tree so that you can see exactly how popular you are with another empire and why. It also added the ability to give missions to computer/players to make them do your bidding, and it also allows you to give missions to the pirate faction, which will raid your target. Diplomatic envoy ships were added to enable you to improve your relations with other empires to reach the final addition of the mini-expansion: Empire pacts. These allow both you and the empire you make them with have extremely powerful benefits, such as increased research speed, increased ship armor, etc.
TL;DR (ie "You are lazy") An awesome game. Go get it.
Mainly what I was looking for was who around here plays it? I know Scrambles does, and he's been artfully avoiding playing a round with me, despite the fact that I've yet to play any multiplayer. I'd love to get a huge 8 person free for all going to see how Diplomacy makes everyone work together to kill me.
