So I've largely ignored trading until now. I decided I should go and try to find an Otolaryngologist's Mirror and went to the Steam trading forum. Which is filled with 500-page threads of people going and most of the time they don't have the items any more anyway. How the heck does anyone find any actual trades there? Or is there some other website with better filtering and stuff?

Well, we have our spreadsheet, but other than that, I've just been dealing with crappy forum systems like Steampowered. Occasionally I visit reddit.com/r/tf2items, but it's the same over there as it is on SPUF.
BTW, the MKWEA spreadsheet says there is at least 1 Mirror up for trade.

TF2 Trading Post is pretty much the best trading website. I've gotten some decent trades there, and the system is set up a lot better than TF2items. You can set up trades and make offers on other people's trades within the site, it allows you to offer/request multiple/alternate items, and it has a pretty decent search. You can also just browse around to get an idea of what different things are worth. If you are on TF2items, make sure you filter down to people who've only marked a few hats to get rid of all the idiots who marked every hat.

lol, when there's deals like that, Cake, the buyers will literally hunt down the person's steam profile and send a request directly in game or send a friend request before even trying to PM them. A lot of newbs like that don't even know how PMing works and bumping the thread with a post results in more people seeing the thread and thus more people competing for the offer. It's pretty ridiculous. I can't even use the Steam forum anymore except for the Paint thread just because Paint is an untapped market that most traders never even consider. Crates is another such market (I got two hats for 4 crates, and I wasn't even asking for them >. >).
Mostly, nowadays my trades are only handled by sitting in a trade server and keeping an eye out for people looking for something I have while I do other things, or just trading a hat for hat in normal servers (doesn't matter what hat, if somebody wants a hat I have I just ask for a hat back) until eventually somebody offers a hat I want for a hat I have. So, basically just cycling them around until I finally come to one I want. Works well, sometimes I'll get a Lumbricus Lid for a Mirror, sometimes I'll trade a Mullet for an Ellis' Cap. I just don't care anymore XD

(Hello. Newcomer to the server and forum here.) I only started playing TF2 a few months ago, despite having gotten Orange Box fairly close to launch, so I barely have enough items to get into trading. Of course, I have enough to do just trying to improve and memorize the maps so I'm not too bothered, but it's hard not to get caught up in hat and trade fever. Right now I'm trying to be content just crafting metal bit-by-bit from drops..., but I do hope to one day achieve my dream of wearing Max's severed head.
The crates are really nagging at me, though. I have 7 of them unopened and enough pessimism to expect 3 Equalizers and 4 Shortstops.

If you have seven crates, you should be able to convert it into a Max's, if xadera's trade values are accurate. Just find people who want crates.
And just so it's clear you won't be able to craft a Max's. It's a promotional item so that's just not possible.

I really doubt you could get a Max head for just crates, even if you bought matching keys. Unless you find somebody with a serious gambling problem, it's just too big a risk for such a coveted hat (in fact, the most coveted hat and the least given hat according to TF2items). In the only offer on TF2TP, the guy is asking for unusual piles. If you're really dedicated, you could try to pull a Red Paperclip. Take your crates, trade them for a few crappy hats or metal, trade those up to mediocre hats, and so on until you've amassed enough wealth to get a Max hat off of somebody. If you can get an unusual or a few Polycount hats, that would probably be enough to get you a Max head. It is possible, I know of a few people who have managed to amass every hat in the game.

Yeah, Doctor Wheeze is quite correct. Though, that's only true atm. A week ago, Earbuds were going for 2-3 hats each. Now they're going for 4-8 hats each, which is just wrong. Some people amassed earbuds from normal servers, having upwards of 12 in their backpack, and are now asking for 4+ hats for each. When the number of people who are williing to pay that much drops (it's already fairly low), then earbuds will go for cheaper.
Same with Max's Head. A few weeks ago you could get one for 4 hats. Now it easily goes for 8 hats, or an unusual hat all on its own. And I'm sure there's some people sitting around who have like 6 in their backpack from ripping off normal people.

Ha - yes, red paperclipping actually crossed my mind when Mann-conomy debuted. Then I remembered that 1) I dislike haggling, bargaining, gambling, etc., and 2) I spend enough time on this game as it is and the time spent tracking item values like a stock market day trader and would be better spent learning how to bleeding rocket jump. (But everyone's info on what items are going for and so forth is really helpful. I'll eventually need to do something with these crates.)

Sorry, I wasn't being clear. I didn't mean to imply that it could be done in one single transaction (i.e. Max's for seven crates), but rather with some shrewd trading it's well within possibility (note my use of plural in reference to trading partners). Although that wasn't accounting for inflationary prices, so /shrug. Honestly, it's going to be a while before prices settle down a bit since we're still in the initial flurry of activity where people try to "game" the system. Things will probably stabilize in a couple of months.
