I'm wondering if anyone could offer some rocket jumping advice.
I've been practicing basic rj'ing (also watching/reading various tutorials) and while my high upwards are okay, those long distance, forward jumps are giving me trouble (the type which would clear the water gap in the center of 2Fort, for example).
I believe the key combo and speed is right (W + fire* + jump + crouch), but I either just get launched upwards while drifting towards the right or travel forward only a few feet. Changing up the key combo and tweaking mouse sensitivity and mousepad movement/measurement haven't helped yet (though I'll keep trying).
I expect hours more practice are involved until even basic rj'ing clicks (forget the fancy stuff), but I want to make sure I'm not overlooking something.
Suggestions?
*fire = swivel the mouse to fire directly behind, 135-180 degrees

To rocketjump forward, I normally hit the bottom edge of a wall while in the air. Works great from Badwater's first BLU spawn.

I normally do crouch then jump, but then I can only reliably get the high jumps

Yeah, I usually get the high jumps now (and can occasionally aim it to let's say, land on a roof beam) but I've never once been able to produce that forward push like I'm being shot out of a cannon.
Faded - do you mean you fire off of a wall after a simple spacebar jump? I could give that a try. Anything to try to survive while YouStepped is around. (I fear for my life. Please send help.)

No, I crouchjump, and I fire off of the lowest part of the wall possible.

It's all about the angle, IMO. Do it too far beneath yourself and you go higher rather than further. Too steep an angle and you get less of the blast (and therefore a weak jump). For the furthest, doing it against a wall for a greater angle than you can on the floor.

If you want to have a long forward jump, IE a jump that sends you far forward but not high enough to have fall damage you will really be walking sideways instead of forward. Like pressing A+W or just A when you go to jump. It's in good practice to not being holding down W at all when you start to rjump. It's easier to aim how far away your rocket is, you won't have to make sudden snap shots, and the biggest benefit is the ability to strafe midair. Here is probably the best video on learning basics: www.youtube.com/watch?v=QN99Al_rRnI I'd be willing to help out on a rocket jumping map sometime in the future.

Awesome - thanks, everyone! I have lots more to check/try now. And I hadn't seen that video by Jaeger yet. It's excellent.
