I think it's another successful troll by Valve. If anything they'll be showing CS 2 and HL2: Ep 3 at this year's E3.

store.steampowered.com/news/2552/It's L4D, with new maps, new charicters, new boss mobs, new weapons and more things for the director to control. The thing that caught my eye was this tid bit: "Director the ability to procedurally change weather effects, world objects, and pathways in addition to tailoring the enemy population, effects, and sounds to match the players' performance." Sounds like the maps are all going to be more open, with different path options, but the dirrector will have the power to close some of them off. Hows that for replay value?

Hey everybody. I stumbled upon your server on Sunday may 30th and had a blast (I was the noob medic running around making Rhench ubered). I had so much fun I thought I'd stop by here and introduce myself.
Also, l4d2 looks legit and it looks awesome. I actually got started with valve playing l4d (still play too, tag is also pheonixace7) and just came across tf2 a few weeks ago when they had the free weekend. I personally think the chainsaws, frying pans, etc look pretty interesting in l4d2.
Anyways, I look forward to stopping by the server and playing some more with you guys sometime if you will have me. Catch ya later.

So it would seem I was wrong about it being a troll. But I still find it hard to believe they're releasing a new version so soon. This IS Valve we're talking about.

Okay so...
1. Valve realeased L4D with full intention of adding additional campaigns and characters etc.. I can find press info stating so..
2. The L4D community has been an abused one. While we were waiting and expecting more content than the minimal that was initially released, instead they were working on the next game. The Versus and Survival modes were an after thought.
3. This type of update, at the most should be an expansion to the game. Not a full stand alone game. By doing this, Valve then the L4D communities into L4D1 and L4D2, instead of a single L4D community, leading towards bickering over which is superiour and gaining them smaller sales than to add a direct expansion giving more content to those who got the game, and those who stated they would refuse to get L4D until additional content was released would finally get their copy.
4. Valve has done a very good job of getting us attached to the characters of L4D. They all have unique personalities and we've all invested a bit into them as in an lead character of a game, and to just abandon them is pretty ruthless to those loyal to the story and setting of L4D.
5. L4D still has it's bugs, the lobby/matchmaking system still are buggy.
Part of me is very excited for L4D2 for obvious reasons. New camps, chars, weapons, weather and level changes.. but I am very disappointed and feel a bit cheated by Valve as this situation is going at this time.
More to come I'm sure..

What I believe, is that Valve seems to almost have used Left 4 Dead like a beta. I am also very excited about L4D2 but it is very odd they are doing a new one this early.

What I'm hoping for is some sort of sale if you already own the first game. Maybe something like this scheme: L4D1: $30 L4D2: $40 Both: $60 If you own L4D1, L4D2 is $30? Or they could do a buy-three-get-one four-pack like they did for L4D1. If they do, I'll be selling three copies. :-) Edit: Confirmed $60 for the 360 version. www.xbox.com/en-US/games/l/left4dead2/

Looking forward to seeing you in-game again soon. :3 Unless the Boomer pukes rainbows, I don't see why they needed to release a new game.

I was watching the gameplay videos today, and several things struck me, as a somewhat experienced L4D player. Starting with the most obvious and leading into the less so: - Melee weapons - they take up a slot in your hands, meaning if you are carrying around a melee weapon, you are not able to fire your gun, without dropping said melee weapon. Tactically interesting because, although it is powerful, it basically takes up a "space" in your four-man party. This broadens the layouts you can use (rather than the simple two-tier, short/medium(/long) range layout of the original).
- Incendiary rounds - light stuff on fire from long-range. But it only lasts for one clip which both means that it's very limited in its utility, but also very potent when you use it. And it appears that you have to run your clip dry before switching, which is also interesting... (As you can see here, reloading with incendiary ammo doesn't appear to do anything.)
- It appears the better weapons (tier-twos) are located one at a time, and perhaps in specific locations - a sniper rifle on top of a scaffolding, for instance. This means that you don't always have your ideal loadout when you hit them. It also may not be random this time around, or, as in the first L4D, they may spawn in certain locations, but only one location each time.
- "Moving" crescendo events, yes! The one in the demos is you set off an alarm when you enter an area and have to race around a fence to turn it off. It is the answer to the "bunch up and wait until the bad stuff goes away" strategy that comes up in L4D often (which isn't all that interesting, really).
- Wandering witches. Makes them a lot more scary.
- Fire-proof zombies. Actually I hope that in some areas they'll be more common, but it definitively throws a curveball at you - especially if you have incendiary ammo at the time =D In addition, the way they were talking about them, there's a host of other "uncommon commons" as was mentioned in the dev commentary.
- In one of the videos you'll notice that the guy has two different pistols. The one in his right hand clearly has an under-barrel laser sight. This just made me go "!?" but I don't know if it's significant at all...
- At the end of this movie it appears that a hunter drops from the ceiling of the safe room. Nice.
- It's kinda superficial, but it appears that the smokers actually choke their victims now (rather than just binding them, heh). You can hear the one guy (Coach) being choked in this video
- An actual setting, rather than just a generic one - in this case, New Orleans. The developers have also mentioned going a bit more into the backstory of the game (as I recall) and certain things like the "WHERE IS GEDA" graffiti around 0:13-14 in this video pop up as curious, as the graffiti in L4D was largely self-contained. It appears that they're going to bring a larger story element to the game.
- They also mentioned weather effects, which makes sense since they've been playing around with weather effects in TF2.
- An improved AI director that can alter walls and lighting, which seems like it'd be a huge deal. Imagine if the path you were planning to take was locked, or had a tree fall across it or something - and suddenly you were a lot further from safety than you thought. That would be a huge curveball, especially with pressure from the infected.
All in all, I'm pretty excited. I certainly hope that all the elements come together to make for a much improved L4D experience (and I do love the original, so that's saying a lot).

In addition to what Pneuma said above; - The (not infected) military makes an appearance, which should mean more varied events. Air strikes, supply drops (determined by the director?), tanks etc.
- When you pick up a melee weapon, your gun stays with you. If it's full of incendiary rounds, you'll get to use those when you drop the melee weapon.
- That hunter does seem to come from directly above... are hunters getting the ability to stick to ceilings, Natural Selection style?

Could be a super-nifty wallspring, or that they just spawned one there for coolness effect in the video. But I'd like Hunters to be able to stick to ceilings. And for smokers to use their tongues to climb places that they otherwise couldn't. And for Boomers to... well, I don't know, regenerate vomit faster based on number of hits their zombies get? Something.

Speaking of this, I loved Natural Selection, will buy it's sequel without question or research, and demand to know who else plans to do so. (You may seek me out privately when such a time occurs.)

I think it's too early for l4d2.
and i also feel like it's faaarrrr too much to just add-on to regular l4d. that'd be quite some update, eh?
I hope mah brothers buys it (:

Oh right. I forgot about this thread. As I posted in the other thread: L4D2 is now available for pre-purchase. However, before you buy it, I highly suggest you look at this event thread, which includes a full copy of Left 4 Dead 2 as first prize.
If you don't want to play in the event, you can still pre-purchase Left 4 Dead 2 through the normal means.
