Something I've been meaning to post for a while. A quick thread for things to do to keep the server alive for longer. You don't have to follow these suggestions, but the server will stay populated for longer if you do.
Don't be an asshole. Yelling at people doesn't make them listen, it makes them leave. (Generally, you're all great at this.)
When pubbies see or hear several people all leaving at once, they immediately thing the server is dying, and they find another server to play on. To stop this from happening, simply change a couple things about how you leave.
Saying "I think I'm going to leave soon" doesn't mean "I'm disconnecting soon," it means "the server's dying soon, find a new one." This is especially true if others chime in with "Yeah, I'm headed out too." I'm not saying not to say goodbye, I'm just saying to make it quite short and not too far in advance. "Alright, I'm leaving, see everyone later!" and disconnect within 10 seconds.
Also, try not to leave in groups if at all possible, especially during a map change. Leaving during map change is a common occurrence, so non-regulars will thin out. If regulars also thin out, the rest of the pubbies leave to find a full server. Please stay on the server for two to five minutes into the next map before leaving.
If you're rolling the other team, either back off a bit or, if you're doing well, try to switch teams to balance it out. Nothing's as lame as rolling so hard that the server empties.
If the server freaks out and gets restarted, please don't immediately rtv. Wait for the other regulars who were on the server to rejoin, so they actually have a choice in the vote. Seeing the server restart, then joining to find that five players have RTV'd to a map you hate doesn't give much incentive to stay on the server.
When there are low numbers of players on the server, vote for maps that are known to bring in players. You don't need to RTV to them. Maps that are known to attract people: Badwater Basin, Dustbowl, Gold Rush, Gorge, Gravel Pit, Harvest, Nucleus, Sawmill, Thunder Mountain, Viaduct.
That's all I can think of right now.
