...for an awesomely-low price. I know a bunch of you have it, is it good? I've played a bunch of Civ4 (and earlier Civs), but the problem I found is games kinda peter out at the end. Does Civ 5 spice it up at all, or is it just the same formula with better graphics or something?

Civ5 is good. If you like Civ games, I doubt you'll be disappointed. It's probably worth purchasing at a discount.
I'm not sure what you mean about Civ5 spicing up the Gameplay. The endgame stage has as genteel pacing as ever but, warmongering is a lot more fun because of the hexagonal tiles and disallowed unit stacking.
There certainly aren't as many bells and whistles as Civ4:Beyond the Sword had so, maybe you'll be disappointed if that's what you expect from a Civ game.
Also, the DLC is mostly a ripoff (as always).

For anyone who has had Civ 5 for a while, the total conversion mod Civ Nights is pretty good. New wonders, new units, new policies, and updated AI. It's like a Civ expansion pack. You can download and install it in game.

Yes. It's installed from the mod menu in game.

If I get that mod, can I still play with players who don't have it?

If I get that mod, can I still play with players who don't have it? Yes. To play a mod you have to install it, then turn it on. If you want to go back to vanilla Civ 5, just turn it off.
