Thought it might be fun to share the kind of stuff we normally listen to before/during/after popping heads and getting hit with the douchebat.
My musical tastes are kinda weird... I usually listen to industrial, metal, classic rock, gabber/hardcore (techno), pretty much anything that puts you in the right frame of mind to rip someone's face off. Yet at the same time, I can sit there and listen to almost anything* from classical to J-Pop and still enjoy it.
Not sure how many of you know what hardcore is (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardcore_techno), but it's evolved so much over the past 30 or so years with so many subgenres and scenes that it's sometimes hard to define. So, here's an attempt at describing the kind of stuff I like (abliet at a lower BPM than usual). Apologies for the YouTube link, but I couldn't find this one elsewhere.
This one is more lolsy than anything; just shy of a remix of Elvis Presley's "Hound Dog." But the way the sample at 0:18 leads into the kick drum (and the breaks that follow) makes me wet. :3
*Except country. Country gets you banned.

I like to listen to Beethoven's Virus or Orange Box soundtrack on shuffle while I play. When I play RTS games I like to listen to the aforementioned with some choice Command and Conquer musics and Geometery Wars' Retro Evolved (background music for the Retro Evolved gamemode of Geometery Wars, a fastpaced, retro-shooter game with some really fun/cool gameplay perks thrown in. The music is an eccentric, catchy techno loop) mixed in. Beethoven's Virus as performed by Banya is probably my favourite game background music.

I need sfx to play. Like, not just to play well. I don't understand what I'm doing if I don't have sounds. I've always been an aural (read: auditory-based) person that way. Outside of gaming, I listen to a random assortment of things: techno, j-pop, Jim Croce, Aaron Copland, Halestorm, and whatever I can find with heavy bass. Also, no twangy country. I can deal with some country (not much), but if it has twang, it must be burned. With fire.

I don't always listen to music while playing, but when I do, I choose Pandora. (Stay thirsty, my friends.) I mostly listen to my "Alt Rock/Techno" station on Pandora, which really includes 90's alt-rock, anything related to 90's alt-rock, and anything even barely related to that. I try to stay away from heavy rap, heavy techno, heavy rock, heavy metal, and heavy weapons guy. www.pandora.com/people/ih8evilstuff

Good thread, Sora. I always like to spread the music I enjoy around when the chance crops up, and in return get the opportunity to hear new stuff. Like the song you linked for instance - that shit is crazy! Ok, well let's just start off with this so everyone can get acclimated: Ishkur's Guide to Electronic MusicNot only does it help you to understand a lot of the different genres, but it gives a rough history of when and where they originated! And to kick off my contribution, let's start with a taste of things to come... In no particular order: Daft Punk - Around the World/Harder Better Faster Stronger DJ Shadow - Blood on the mottorway (the video is not at all related) DJ Shadow - Fixed Income Infected Mushroom - Disco Mushroom The Evpatoria Report - Dipole Experiment Pendulum - Fasten your Seatbelt Portishead - Sour Times Ratatat - Shiller Now at this point, I'd like to state that I don't necessarily think these are the best songs from each respective artist, but I think that they portray pretty accurately the type of sound you'd hear if you investigated them deeper. I do enjoy each of these song a great deal, though. Also, I'm forcing myself to stop short here. I spent a fair amount of time trying to force all these [ youtubes ] into a table to avoid the dreaded vertical-scroll (I don't actually mind it), but for the life of me can NOT get it to work. I'd just like you to know, I have more I'd like to share but will restrain myself until I get the go-ahead to post some more quality schtuff. One more for the road. Enjoy! Yonderboi - Before you snap

Beethoven's Virus as performed by Banya is probably my favourite game background music. <333 Although I don't play RTS, I've heard the C&C OST was good; I'll have to have a listen. Ok, well let's just start off with this so everyone can get acclimated: Ishkur's Guide to Electronic MusicNot only does it help you to understand a lot of the different genres, but it gives a rough history of when and where they originated! Nice guide, and a much-needed history lesson for those already familiar with the genre! Although, I should point out for the uninitiated that the author's history of Gabba/Gabber and Hardcore in general is more ripping on the style and less rooted in fact - for example, Hellfish is French AFAIK, and is listed under "Gabber" or "American Hardcore." Only a Euro would associate something they don't care for with being American... (irony: you tend to see a lot of Euro vs. NA bullshit in the community - don't take me seriously here). So take the opinions in that section with a grain of salt, and listen to each and see what you like. :] Thanks for sharing those tracks, too! DJ Shadow, Daft Punk, Infected Mushroom... the man has good taste. :3 I think I may have to start getting reacquainted! Do feel free to post more (and for those who haven't posted yet, please do!).

Oh, and I forgot to mention Halestorm. They are amazing, and not just because I've got a huge crush on Lzzy Hale.

Oh. I have a memory the span of a goldfish. Who are you people again? Well, I'm a Nigerian prince, and I've been guiding you through the steps of helping my father transfer out his fortune before the angry mob decide to steal it from him. I just need to know your credit card information so I can transfer the money to you.

Hmm when i play fps like tf2 i need something fast and hard(insert anal penetration joke here) to play to to get me pumped. Same thing when i play sports. But because i really don't like to listen to rap or heavy metal, i often listen to light rap like 3oh!3 and Fort Minor. Throw some fast shit in and im game.
And if im goofing around, i might leave the mp3 of this song in that backround in repeat.

Sorry for the double post. Thought maybe someone would contribute before I got around to this.
And away we go!
Let's start out with a big one for me when I got back into the electronic scene a few years ago after going through an akward hard rock/metal phase (not that there's anything wrong with that) Massive Attack - Angel
Ronald Jenkees - Guitar Sound
Two from Sia
Sia - Breath Me
Sia - Buttons
Now she split off to do her own thing after collaborating with these guys
Zero 7 - Somersault
Zero 7 - Today
Unkle - Eye for an Eye
Yonderboi - Follow me Home
Tricky - Hell is around the corner

Stupid 3-Oh-3... <.< Ok, I can't hate them, they named themselves after my area code. It is annoying that some local radio stations have started playing them like they're new these last couple months though.
As for me, I like rock mostly. Punk and Alternative Rock float my boat. But I've got a bit of a soft spot for Ska as well.
Punk:
Ska:
I Hate Kate is probably my favorite band though.
Techno is alright but I feel like it's weird when it's the only thing someone listens to, save it for dance parties, imo.

Well, my music tastes are weird, I dislike things with strong base lines, well frankly anything repetitive gets on my nerves; like blasty's god-awfull Noming song, or techno (with the notable acception of Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger). I think I value witty lyrics over everything else, which leads me to artists like They Might Be Giants, Cake, Johnathan Coulton, and Barenaked Ladies. I am also a band geek, so I do enjoy an Aaron Copland's hoedown or Bernstein's Candide (<-- awesome btw) now and again. I know it's not typical gamer repertoire but I don't really care. Please to Be enjoying links of things I mentioned. Edit: Aww fuck those links go find it yourself.

Good call on Barenaked Ladies scrambles. They are one of my favorite bands. Got to hang out with them after a show they did in Boulder, CO back before they were big. Some of the coolest guys around. Their Christmas album is awesome. (yes they have a christmas album and yes it is great.) barenakedladies.com/My other favorite band is Live. www.friendsoflive.com/Huge fan of theirs for a long time now. I mostly enjoy classic rock, blues, alt rock, etc. Boston Styx (everyone is a closet styx fan, just admit it already) Weezer Coldplay Kenny Wayne Sheppard Band Johnny Lang Collective Soul Big Head Todd and the Monsters Imagination Movers (yes I have a 5 year old and 10 month old, these guys rock!)

One of my faves: Techno is alright but I feel like it's weird when it's the only thing someone listens to, save it for dance parties, imo. You might consider opening your mind to new things and trying to refrain from being so critical of what other people enjoy. You might just hear something you like that you weren't willing to entertain before, and generally just be happier for it.

also, isn't the guy from rbf in forces of evil? y/n?

Yeah, Forces of Evil is no more cause he chose rbf over them. I hardly count the offspring as "punk" considering their debutes on mtv and fuse, but whatever. Take it up with iTunes not me but even though they're on MTV and Fuse now they certainly didn't start out that way. I quote Wikipedia when I say "... their 1994 album Smash, which is the best-selling independent label album of all time,..."

Offspring definitely started off as punk, but in their more recent years, idk so much. Either way, there's no question that they've become more mainstream (in their sound and otherwise), for better or worse.

yeahhhh.
but thats like trying to defend greenday.
PERSONALLY, I feel like true punk, is punk forever. if they ever do turn mainstream, they must not have been very punk. Just ..an illusion of punk? I dunno, hah.
It's no big deal. It just bugs me when people call bands like the offspring and greenday punk.

Yeah but if you're that successful it's hard not to go mainstream, if the man offered me millions of dollars I'd stop telling him to go **** himself.

Yeah man! You should totally just... you know, you should just put on an old man sweater jacket, take a bunch of drugs and then go get yourself a shotgun! Fame and fortune is for the unworthy! I kid, I kid Srsly, though... punk is dead. And to be constructive, Rayfe has informed me that The Prodigy's new CD is fantastic. And it is. It's fantastic. Here's a taste (but just a taste, man): Make sure you turn this one up as reasonably loud as you can get away with...
