Notch has confirmed that there will be a Secret Friday update today. I'm betting that most of you don't know what that is.
Every week, Notch normally puts something cool and new into the game, pushes it out on Friday, and doesn't tell anyone what it is. Players are supposed to have fun finding what's new. As finding everything for yourself is the point, I'm going to impose a quick rule on this thread: Do not post about the Secret Friday content until Sunday, let's say at 12:01am Eastern US time. This gives everyone a full day to find it if they want to, and I don't think waiting a day is all that bad. :-)
Note: As this is an Alpha version of the game, any and all updates may break your saves. If you want to keep records of what you have built, do so in image or video form.

More fun Minecraft news: Paypal is being a shit! Basically they've locked Notch's account with over 600,000 euros in it for "suspicious transactions." Paypal has a history of pulling this crap. According to Notch, the account is emptied every week, the 600,000 euros is just what's accumulated since the account was locked. Moral of the story: Paypal sucks, don't use Paypal if you can avoid it.

The Minecraft site is getting hammered. I can't update.
I'm glad the game got this popular. :-)

Probably from all the cash he's makingz Yeah, Paypal is currently holding 600,000 euros of Notch's money, saying they won't be able to unlock the account for at least two weeks. Shitsux. I'm trying to find an alternative to Paypal for the MKWEA donations stuff, but the company that hosts MKWEA only accepts Paypal and credit cards, and every service charges to transer money to a back account. Paypal is charging me nearly a dollar for every donation and reserve slot purchase, btw. :-(

I've been playing on a server with some friends for elsewhere and so far our achievements include:
*Planting trees on top of trees until we hit the top of the world. *One guy burnt and entire island with lava. *Built a floating glass garden. *Got myself so lost I still haven't found my way back to where they all were (Sailing ftw, compasses are for girls.)
It's kinda tough to do a whole lot since it's not exactly survival multiplayer yet but it's still loads of fun.

I think I've been playing this game way too much... I've been playing since the 8th and this is my home, so far: The storage room, self-explanatory: i.imgur.com/Ou4no.jpgMy quarry. I was so pissed with this. Started a few blocks below sea-level and went all the way down to bedrock. However, as I started at the top, I found a cavern. Spent sooo much time exploring it and it just didn't seem to end. I've counted 3 natural holes from it to the surface and I eventually just left it to continue the quarry all the way down. Broke into another cavern near the bottom, with so many pools of lava in it. Explored that for a bit, it was huge itself, and it turned out to be connected to the cavern I was exploring at the top! So I spent so much work making the cavern only to find out there was a natural path down. i.imgur.com/a04Qw.jpgi.imgur.com/gWk1m.jpgA tree grove I planted for easy wood. The last time I cleared it out, I got over 130 logs: i.imgur.com/t5aZT.jpgBack of the mountain I built into. I had spawned not too far away, spotted the mountain from the front, and thought "THAT is gonna be my home!": i.imgur.com/VHtNk.jpgFront side of the mountain. As a note, no, you can't find reeds in winter world, Notch hasn't fixed that yet. I had to use a program to turn off winter, then explore newly generated terrain until I found a single reed, and then turned winter back on: i.imgur.com/Ti4AU.jpgAnd this is the main room I've been working on. Just so you know, it took more than 6 hours of waiting for that grass to grow: i.imgur.com/XI9Sd.jpgi.imgur.com/8NJIJ.jpgi.imgur.com/kh6XZ.jpgEdit: Oh, and to note, my item bar changed halfway through taking the pictures because I feel to my death trying to get a good shot of the quarry XD

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
I really really wanted that lava source block; it seemed like a good idea to mine around the lava to get at the block at the time...... Lava is hot.

The Creeper is actually very misunderstood. If you run away from him, he gets angry, but if you run up to him and hug him (the H button), he'll be your friend.

How to resole the most common Minecraft problems from this update: Grey screen? Go to C:\Documents and Settings\YOURNAME\Application Data\.minecraft\ and delete everything except the saves folder. (You should probably make a backup of the saves folder on a regular basis, anyway.) Failure to launch? Get the latest Minecraft.exe, either from the official site or from my Dropbox. No sounds or music? You must have installed the game recently. Notch removed the sounds from the downloader because they take up about 80% of the game's size. Seriously, the sounds are 28MB, the full game is 35MB. Fortunately, Xadera didn't have to reinstall the game, so he had the sound files. I'm now hosting them on my Dropbox. Here's a link. UnRAR and drop it in the folder mentioned in the readme. Edit: Quick note, your .minecraft folder might be located in a different spot, depending on your OS. One of my friends says his was "C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft". Just do some searching, you'll find it. :-)

Application Data is where I'd look first. I have a desktop shortcut to it, it's so important For XP, there is no "Roaming" folder by the way. And to play during the free weekend, just hit "login" without putting in any credentials and you're good to go. Time to actually try out this game

Windows tip: You can get to that folder by typing %appdata% into the address bar of Explorer. On the Mac version it's in username\library\application support\minecraft. I put a little shortcut in Finder to application support because it's a v. important folder. On the Linux version you probably have to do some crazy magic, you're on on your own. Anyway! Some people might be wondering why my screenshots look different. It's because I'm using the Painterly Pack. The Painterly Pack is a texture replacement pack which is awesome and gets updated almost constantly. There's also tons of alternate textures for nearly everything (which are easy to select with the customizer he has). It's not just an aesthetic thing either, it improves the visual design of the game a lot. For example, wheat now turns a different color as it grows making it easier to gauge how done it is. There's new armors and tools that aren't all just palate swaps of each other. Poke around on the site to see everything that's changed. It's made by a dude called kas. This isn't the only good texture pack* out there, but it's my favorite. It's awesome enough that Notch has apparently contacted kas about it. Maybe not necessarily for replacing the default with it - they were kind of vague, but at least some kind of link on minecraft.net. Pretty cool, in my humble opinion! I've made a bunch of upgrades to my tower, including: - My minecart track now stretches across the ocean to the other continent. Still haven't reached my destination, but the hard part is done. I wish I had had crouching when I was building it.
- The station also now includes a cart holding station that sends me a cart whenever I stand on a button.
- I expanded my lavacube by one square on either side because when I actually filled it with lava I realized that it was really small on the inside. Also, I put a treasure chest at the center of it, but I'm not sure what to put in it.
- I've started a drilling project all the way down to the bedrock under my tower. The top two floors of this are an indoor tree farm and a vault which, if I can figure it out, I am going to build a combination lock for. After that I'm basically just going to be strip-mining. I also intend to hollow out around it so I can actually take a screenshot.
I'll post pics when I get farther along on my drilling project. *Even though Painterly is the best you should take a look at these too, they're pretty good.e: Faded: No, I don't think anybody's found a use for that yet. It's like eggs.

Just rename the folder to a world you like less, it doesn't matter which world it is.

So once I figured out that you needed a pickaxe to actually get stone from stone (>.<) I set to work and now I have buckets! with lava sources in them! in my pants! I've had quite some adventures with ninja creepers. Once I had one chase me around a very hazardous area for all of 7 seconds, before I pushed it into some lava. Another was juuust about to get me before I knocked it back into 4 zombies and a skeleton. I survived that fight with 1/2 hp Hey, aside from the red torches which don't seem to do anything (I have 45 :/), what do you do with that red powder stuff?

Oh jesus I think you need a computer science degree to watch that video. Here is a simpler video that explains redstone: (it might help to watch the previous video as well) You can find information on how to do fancier things like make logic gates and clocks on the Minecraft wiki.
