Anyone here play Minecraft? I bought it last week, it's pretty awesome. To those that don't know, Minecraft is two separate games. Minecraft Classic is a free, in-browser game. Basically, it's a 3D MSPaint. Place blocks, remove blocks. If you log in, there's even multiplayer. Minecraft Alpha is a very different game. You start with nothing, you have to collect blocks, craft tools, hunt for rare metals, and kill enemies. There is no overall goal, just to acquire More and more stuff until you build the most kickass of castles/lairs/whatever. It costs €10 (about $13), has an in-browser version and a download version. So on to the discussion! I just started, so I don't know much about the game. I carved my hole into a hill, then expanded it out with glass. I seem to be on one of a chain of small islands, with a lot of large, very deep holes. Coal and iron seem to be common, but I haven't ventured down far enough to see any real riches. I have several custom skins. The first one is my Haseo from .hack//G.U., the second is my Lt. Cmdr. Worf in his DS9-era uniform, and the third is a torso-only ghost. | | How about you guys? Any cool stories?

I just got Minecraft a few days ago and it is amazing. I'm working on building an awesome mountaintop fortress with a rail system that will go to other mountains. If I ever finish it maybe I will post some cool pictures?? Also I live in an amazing winter wonderland.
If you don't have Minecraft, get it because 13bux is a steal.

Here's a great description of the game, for those that don't have it yet: In the main mode of the game, you can break apart base materials of the world, and then place them to build structures or break them apart and craft with them (eg: cut down a tree, use the timber to make planks, use the planks to make sticks, use the sticks to make a ladder, etc) you build an abode to start because at night monsters come out that will probably kill you. They will only spawn in the dark (which includes caves during the day)
You can explore the world, find caves, spelunk through them to find rare materials (diamonds, gold, iron, etc) or you can just mine deeper and deeper below wherever you settled, until you hit lava.
The world has the potential to be 18 times the earth's size, and is randomly generated so no two worlds are the same. If you do venture out, make sure you can find your way back though.

So, how does multiplayer function? Do you go around working cooperatively on building a town together, fending off the night-beasts? How does the world size change, is that something you set when you start the game?

There are two versions of multiplayer. Classic Multiplayer is very different from Alpha Single Player. in Classic, you have an unlimited number or every type of block, so you run around placing things. You build large, amazing structures, and then a griefer comes along and mutilates your tower/bridge/mega man sprite.
Survival Multiplayer is in EXTREME Alpha condition. It is riddled with bugs and is a mess to play. There are no enemy mobs, furnaces don't work correctly, and people don't keep their inventories when they quit, but Notch (the game's creator and sole developer) is working hard to get everything ironed out. People still play it, though, but I haven't had the time to try it out. I've been having too much fun in single player Alpha.

people don't keep their inventories when they quit You can work around this by using persister. It will save your inventory client-side (you'll still lose anything in chests). I haven't used it because I haven't actually played SMP yet so don't ask me how. Also, screw the snow fort, here is the tower I have been building for the past week or so. It's eight floors tall at 4 blocks per floor (with the exception of the top two floors). It stretches from sea level to cloud level. It's not anywhere near finished yet, though I am more or less done expanding vertically. Screenshots: The view from the end of my dock, during the day. There used to be more hill here, I kind of demolished it. This tower started life as a humble log cabin on top of a hill - about where the third floor is now. Then I cleared all the hill around it down to the ocean, then built the tower around it. I'm pretty sure this is the least efficient possible way I could have done this. First floor: forge and workbench... Also trap collection! This is a pretty simple trap that sucks mobs in and holds them underwater, then spits out their loot into my base. When I've got loot in there the redstone torch for the appropriate side lights up. Also handy if I happen to drop anything outside. A simple minecart station on the third floor, pretty much just a booster and a small track. Once I get my track more established I'll probably build a cart holding station outside so I'll actually have room. My farm. I've gotten very lazy about harvesting it, I have way more wheat than I know what to do with. The beginnings of my library. Bookshelves are very expensive for something so useless. This fountain pours out four sides of the tower and creates four huge waterfalls. Very scenic. This is also the source of the water that goes down through the library to the farm. It's entirely unnecessary for the farm but it looks cool. The very roomy observation deck, double the size of all the other floors. This is the seventh floor. To the south we see the beginnings of my trans-oceanic railroad track. I'm going across that continent way in the distance (you can see my line of lampposts on the map). It's gonna take a while. God willing, this cube of dirt will become a glass cube full of lava. I tried to make it a sphere but it got too huge and long story short I lost my diamond boots. Hopefully it will end up majestic enough to be worth it. I think it looks pretty at night I didn't take any shots of the second or eighth floors because there's pretty much nothing to see but some chests and a chair on those. Also I didn't hack my inventory, I earned every god-damned cube of cobblestone. Minecraft owns. e: Welp now I feel inadequate www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=18278

Wow, I started yesterday and i'm already totally hooked. I made a video of what I have accomplished in the first two days, it's not as impressive as Wheeze's, but heck it's home and it has lava!! (which is great for killing mobs) There is no sound, but I hope you enjoy... www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRz9ZnYrGnU

This is my world so far: Then @ Night -- My main base is behind the magma flow in the center of the map, and I have an island outpost to the north. 2. Don't you get a little lonely/bored with that? I mean, it's a singleplayer game, right? It is lonely, very much so. You are totally alone in this harsh environment that does not care if you live or die, and all you can do to escape the madness is construct your house, and dig deeper.....

Two questions for Doctor Wheeze... 1. How long did it take you to build that? 2. Don't you get a little lonely/bored with that? I mean, it's a singleplayer game, right? I've been working on this for about a week. You'd think you'd get bored but there's always something else to do. If you get sick of building you can go gather resources or work on your minecart tracks and your traps. When you get bored of that you can go explore a new continent. By the time you get done with that you'll have some new awesome ideas and want to go build that. Also scrambles that lava curtain is brilliant.

Okay, I took some images. I didn't take any images from the outside of my house, as I haven't changed anything. It's carved into a cliff face, kinda boring. Besides, I'm afraid of spiders. 1. What you see after entering. On the left, you can see the tree room and the wheat room. On the right, the nonsense that is the storage room, cart tracks, and entrance to the mining operation. i.imgur.com/GBQVA.png2. The tree room. This needs to be expanded, as the trees are growing far too slowly. The ladders are part of a failed mine cart experiment. i.imgur.com/LPPd5.png3. The wheat room. Bread is the easiest source of health, and I seem to damage myself a lot from accidental falls in the mine. You'll see what I mean later. i.imgur.com/8ErBf.png4. My first actual use of mine cart tracks. this is an overly complicated system. The first cart that comes up from the mine is directed to the storage room, the second one is diverted to a storage area (as seen in center), and the third is directed to tracks near the top-side pool (as seen in center of image 1). i.imgur.com/FpJxk.png5. The storage room. The three leftmost large chests are packed with cobblestone. That's nearly 3,500 cobblestone blocks. Haven't decided what to do with it yet. The other chests are filled with gravel, coal, dirt, and redstone. I have a little iron, gold, and diamond, but not too much. i.imgur.com/PnaK6.png6. The entrance to the mines. i.imgur.com/Ij70J.png7. Long way down. i.imgur.com/cCIR1.png8. Mine carts are the second fastest way to get to the bottom. The fastest? i.imgur.com/MTZRl.png9. SWAN DIVE into the best mine of your life! i.imgur.com/7HueV.png10. Splash landing to stop the fall damage! i.imgur.com/fhWqw.png11. The bottom of the tracks. Pressing that button on the dirt block on the right will send whatever cart is here all the way up to the top. i.imgur.com/s6swo.png12. This is achieved with this booster mechanism as seen here. i.imgur.com/5e7G8.png13. Explanation. i.imgur.com/FlQRR.png14. It is also the fastest way to the top. This is me, sitting in a cart, pressing the switch. i.imgur.com/Oh1xJ.png15. On the other side on the landing pool is my lava storage room. Below is the main mining floor. i.imgur.com/InD0q.png16. Three mines. The one to the slight right was my first one, a rather small one. On the far right (to the right of my hand) is the entrance to my second mine, a very large one. On the left is my third mine, which I've just started. i.imgur.com/kbzbz.png17. A view of my mine as you walk in. Doorway is to the back-right of me. i.imgur.com/ShvH9.pngI mine by digging all the way down to the bedrock, where the gold, redstone, and diamonds are most plentiful. Then I dig in the following pattern, so I can see every single stone. OOOOOOOOOOOXOOOOOOOOOOO ....................... OOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOO ....................... OOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOO ....................... OOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOO ....................... OOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOO ....................... OOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOO

I've only just started and I've been mining more than building but I have questions; How do you move the water and lava around? I assume you placed that stuff and didn't find a natural spring and dig the mountain from around it. Also, how do you get so much iron that you can build that many cart tracks? I only ever find little pockets of ~6 iron, and they're not exactly common. It's been a little easier since I started making my tools out of the blue stuff but you seem to have a crazy amount of track there. Oh, and is there some way I can tweak the game so that my world isn't so shallow?

Scrambles' lavafall is natural. My lavasquares and pools, however, are not. To move around lava and water, make an iron bucket:
... I.I .I.
and use it on the source cube of the water or lava. Be very careful with lava though, it destroys a lot. Wood combusts if it's within 2 squares, it doesn't need to be in contact.
You can get more iron by going deeper or exploring more. It rarely exists in veins of more than 6. Throughout my entire mining operation this far, I've found about 200 iron blocks.
I.I ... Minecraft tracks ISI ... This configuration makes *16* pieces of track I.I ... (I=Iron, S=stick)
The "blue stuff" is diamond.
You can easily "tweak" the game to make it deeper. Build a pickaxe and change the world yourself. :-)

Yup. A creeper blew a hole in one of my walls and while I was fixing it that little guy wandered in.
I named him Nikola.

... use it on the source cube of the water or lava. How do I find the source? do I just keep bricking it up until there's only one square left? Can I accidentally brick up the source and destroy it? I did try that, but I hit some unbreakable rock after going down not too far. I want to move the unbreakable stuff down further.

Any water or lava that's not flowing should be a source block. For water/lavafalls, take the top block. New water source blocks are also created when the surrounding blocks are sources and there is no water under the block, meaning that you can build this: ---- |o.| |.o| ---- ...put water at the o's, and you'll have an infinite pool of water. I did try that, but I hit some unbreakable rock after going down not too far. I want to move the unbreakable stuff down further. The only way to do this would be to move your ground level higher, which you may be able to hack in or something. Minecraft world is 128 blocks from bedrock to the top of the sky, with sea level being 64 blocks from the bedrock. There is no way through the bedrock, though there are very very rare holes in it.

So I was digging around today and found this: There were 4-5 spiders in the room too, and I think it's a little spider spinning around in the flaming cage. There was some random junk in the box, including what looks like a saddle? Anyone know what's going on?

The plot thickens -- a little while later I found another burning spider room and a similar one with zombies instead of spiders. The zombie one had some wheat (I think) in its chest! It's the first wheat I've ever seen so I'd like to farm it, but I can't figure out how. Any tips? Also thanks to everyone's help I've actually started building myself a proper house. It's looking a bit rough right now because I'm still figuring out how to do stuff.

They spawn infinite mobs and are the only place where you can find mossy cobblestone. And that saddle you found is a pig saddle! Put it on a pig and have the ride of your blocky life!

Also, the flaming spider/zombie is a mob spawner. You could leave it as it is and try to harvest goodies from them or destroy it.
To farm, first you need a hoe:
mm. .|. .|. Right click with it on a grass tile to till it. Occasionally, these will drop seeds. You can plant these seeds in any tilled soil. Give it water and don't trample on it and soon you should have some delicious wheat, which you can then make in to bread.

Okay let me get this straight, you're telling me I grow wheat from grass seeds? Not wheat seeds? How do I grow grass then?

You grow grass by putting down fresh dirt outside and waiting.
Yeah, some of the logic doesn't make sense. It takes three wheat at a crafting table to make bread. No water, no eggs, no cooking over a furnace.

More specifically, the grass needs to be adjacent and within one (or possibly two I forget) blocks vertically of a block with grass on it and be exposed to light. The grass will grow in a random amount of time, which will be faster the more grass there is nearby.
Also wheat is a kind of grass!
